Power of the Group: The Great 2017 West Coast Author Tour
by Laura Orsini
Imagine a jumping in an RV, hitting the road, and taking a 3-week trip along the Pacific Coast. What if, as vacation like as it might be, the trip was also a tax write-off, because you’re an author and the trip was a 6-city book tour? Well, stop imagining! The trip is real, and it’s coming up this summer – the tentative dates are Saturday, July 22nd through Friday, August 11th.
This trip is something I’ve been dreaming about for the last couple years – so I finally decided to make it a reality! And I’d like to take 5 other authors with me on this tour that will take us from San Diego through Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and winding up in Vancouver, Canada.
Yep – that means you’ll need a passport if you want to come along. We’ll travel via RV, booking a minimum of one signing/reading event in each city we visit. And we’ll hone our PR skills by writing and sending news releases announcing our visits to the relevant news outlets, the goal to schedule as many interviews as possible along the way. We’ll also sharpen our social media skills, creating group Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts so that we can keep a digital account of our travels and connect with our fans as we go.
Each author will focus on a single title for the tour, although they’re welcome to bring a limited number of other titles with them. (Keep in mind that you will be responsible for carting and carrying your own books.) Will your book sales pay for the tour? Probably not. But you will sell books, gain new fans, and achieve so much more on this once-in-a-lifetime trip. You’ll form lasting friendships, hone your speaking/presenting skills, learn a lot more about marketing, and have a generally exceptional time. This is truly the Power of the Group at work.
Watch the Phoenix Publishing & Book Promotion Meetup for an upcoming session that will teach you how you can go on this trip without spending your own money.
