Today’s focus is on Whim and Whir, or how your workspace arrangements are working for you. Don’t choke! This will be fun. Start by asking yourself the following questions and jotting down or journaling the answers:
- Do I have a regular workspace? If you write at the dining table, and at the kitchen counter, and curled up on the couch, and at Starbucks, and at the library, note that. Then ask yourself these questions for every location where you work. You’ll see some patterns.
- How do I feel when I step into my workspace? Happy, motivated, ready, energized? Or guilty, heavy hearted, tired, resistant? What is it about that workspace that makes you feel that way? Noise, lighting, distractions, clutter, white noise?
- What do I love about my space? Sit in your workspace and look around. Really look. Can you reach for any resource you need and retrieve it quickly? Great! Love the lighting? Great! Love the décor? Great! Love your desk chair? Great! Love your filing system? Great! Love your sound system? Great! Now consider changing EVERYTHING else.
If you are working in four different places at random times, is it because you like change? Or is it because your primary workspace isn’t working for you? If your primary workspace is unappealing or has the wrong lighting or sound, you can change it! Some people like an environment of happy clutter and/or loud music; others prefer a space that could be the After of an HGTV episode, with no soundtrack. The point is to have the best environment for you and your writing.
Make a list right now of anything you don’t love about your workspace. Put those items in priority order and start changing them today. Honor your whims. You deserve a good place in which to work! Soon your productivity will be whirring along. You’ll notice you are more and more The Effective Authorsm .
